." one of the great political debates in washington and around the country has been whether barack obama is a highly partisan democrat bent on liberal agenda or a centrist searching for compromise. it's still early in his second term, but he's recently made moves that seem to answer the question. obama could easily choose a partisan strategy that would be politically effective. don't make deals with the republicans on immigration or entitlement reform and go into the 2014 congressional elections with those problems still alive. with no deal, democrats could campaign as the guardians of medicare and advocates of immigration reform, both electoral winners. that's why some democratic senators have begun to make demands well beyond what republicans can accept. but obama has chosen the second path. two weeks ago, as soon as a group of republican and democratic senators joined forces behind a unified approach to immigration reform, obama signaled his support for it. and this week in urging congress not to allow the so-called sequestration process to force spending cuts, the white house said th

conference today, president obama sounds a dire economic warning over the sequester he calls for yet another delay in those spending cuts. and he calls for another tax increase. now it's up to republicans to respond. remember, spending cut sequester goes into effect in 24 days on march 1st. the sequester by the way was originally the president's idea. let's get right to what the president said. john harwood joins us thousanow all the details. >> as you know, there are two ways to go about deficit reduction under the sequester law passed in 2011. one is the full ten year sequester. that's $1.2 trillion in budget cuts over ten years. the other is to do it piece meal. if do you it just for the rest of of the year, it would just be $85 billion. president obama said if congress can't agree with the full pack annual by march 1st, we need to do something smaller in the name of staving off damage to the economy, to consumer, and to federal workers. here's the president. >> if congress can't act immediately on a bigger package, about they can't get a bigger package done by the time the sequester is s

that will run in five states targeting north carolina senator kay hagen. the ad reads "will obama's gun proposals work? his own experts say no." the debate continues at the national level, and states are moving quickly on gun legislation, but in opposite directions. today the new jersey statehouse will vote on 20 bills, including banning magazines over ten rounds, banning armor-piercing bullets, and requiring universal background checks. on monday the colorado statehouse passed a bill passing universal background checks, limiting magazines to 15 rounds and banning concealed guns in stadiums and on college campuses. meanwhile, in south carolina a state senate committee approved a bill allowing cob sealed guns in bars. republicans in the arizona statehouse introduced a bill that would allow teachers to carry guns in schools, and in wyoming the statehouse just passed a bill that would invalidate a federal ban on assault weapons and charge federal officials trying to enforce the law with a misdemeanor. the wyoming senate is recommending removing that provision gin the fact that it would see

. president obama is warning of dire consequences for all of us in lawmakers don't act quickly. we're talking about those forced budget cuts that take effect march 1st, slashing $85 billion from spending across the board this year. but with just ten days left, the consequences are backing more alarming. president obama outlined some of them today, told congress, let's make a deal while there is still some time. >> my door is open. i've put tough cuts and reforms on the table. i am willing to work with anybody to get this job done. none of us will get 100% of what we want. but nobody should want these cuts to go through because the last thing our families can afford right now is pain imposed unnecessarily by partisan recklessness and ideological rigid tea here in washington. visually, the president tried to make that point by having law enforcement officers standing behind him. many of them could lose their jobs. our joe johns is covering that with the different ways that the budget cuts could directly affect you. we also have renee marsh covering the potential cut and how it kol affect the fo

. look at the front page of "usa today." we'll start there. new polling is showing that president obama has a strong lead over congressional republicans on a host of big issues playing out right now in washington. that's according to the you in noons from "usa today" and pew research center. 45% of those polled say they support the president's approach to cutting the federal deficit. 38% support republicans, even a majority of republican voters endorse tax hikes as well as spending cuts. on gun reform, the president's approach polls six points higher than that of the gop. the poll also finds less than one-third of americans would blame the president if the sequester cuts kick in. nearly half of all americans would blame republicans. and on immigration, half of those polled say the president is taking the right approach. 33% endorse how republicans are tackling the issue. >> so james, if i'm still congressman in northwest florida and somebody hands me this and says, you're in trouble. i'm in trouble. i may get 79% instead of 80% of the vote, but that's what's running the republican brand

presidential candidate possible marco rubio will give the republican response to president obama's state of the union address next week. at this, he'll deliver his response in both english and spanish. let's discuss what's going on in our strategy session. joining us, the democratic strategist, paul begala and alex castellanos. alex, what does that say to you that the senators have picked marco rubio?
